Assignment 5 – Why Aren’t There More Free Dinosaurs

Assignment 5 – Why Aren’t There More Free Dinosaurs

Ah Unity, we meet again. During our first attempts at creating a Unity scene, I struggled with new ways to use the mac mouse, while maintaining a satisfying perspective to continue my work. I quickly fell behind during our step by step instruction, and left the class feeling frustrated.

Determined to become more efficient at using Unity, I made sure to utilize the video tutorial (provided by our lovely professors) and took my time getting to know the program. In the same way that my younger self learned to play and create within all of The Sims games, I found an ease with creating my first successful Unity scene.

My scene, titled "Dino Jam", puts the viewer at an outdoor performance of a dinosaur's piano recital by the lake. Playing a jazz tune, our dino musician is able to attract a sizable audience of fellow prehistoric pals.

Working on this project, I was finally able to figure out how to add water to my scene. A happy mistake, my trees are placed amongst the opening to the field, and amongst the mountains. Playing with the "brush size" and density of the tree placements, I found a way to add more texture to my scene. Notable in the "dinosaur audience", I played around with the sizes of each object I placed as well. I attached a jazzy piano tune to the piano as my audio source, but am interested in finding a way to have the music get louder and softer as you move around the object. Naturally as a fan of video games, I would love to learn how to animate certain objects and create a bigger, more interactive space.

I've only touched the surface of Unity with my scene, so I'm excited to create more intricate scenes.
