Assignment 1: My VR Experience

Assignment 1: My VR Experience

Last Wednesday I had my first VR experience in the Innovation lab. I had never experienced VR technology before, however, I always wanted to experience it. So it was a really exciting experience to me to do some VR cool things. I am really grateful to Prof. Pacheco for providing us such a great chance and so many gears to have such a cool experience.

At first, so many people were using all gears and I did not get one. So I followed Prof. Pacheco and experienced an amazing app in iPad. I forgot the app name, but it was something that could scan the whole human body and quickly form a 3D model of the people being scanned. This app is really amazing because what it scanned was really detailed and subtle. There is also another app which could scan the whole room and make a 3D room.I don't think it also worked so well because people in the room were actually moving, and that could affect the scanning result.

Then I went to the round table and picked up the Google Cardboard because that looks the easiest one to use. I downloaded the app named Littlstar, and opened a game sample named Unexpected Guest. I have played this game before so I wanted to experience a different vision of it. However, I found my sight became a little bit dizzy. At first I did not get the reason. When I look through the app again, I found that I did not turn on the VR mode, which should look like two squares of the same view on the screen. After adjusting that, the vision became clear. I could hear the sound of the video clip, however, there is nothing special with the sound I used to hear.

At this time, I found there were extra Samsung Gears so I went for it. I watched a song movie, which was really amazing. At first I was sitting in the front of a band, and I felt the band players were just sitting next to me. I felt like I was physically present in them, and the singers were singing right to me. The sound was so real when I was wearing headphones, and I could felt sound from a specific direction. This one was the best VR experience in my Wednesday's journey I think.

I also experienced Google Earth on Oculus Rift and Fruit Ninja on HTC Vive. I did not hear much sound on Oculus, however, it was still amazing that I could touch a fictitious space with my fingers. However, when I look downward, the ground scenery was twisty. The Fruit Ninja one was my favorite part. I really like the game, and I never imagine that I can enter the field to cut the fruits with my own "blade".

This experience was really special to me. Also, I found that VR gears are more and more convenient to people's family-use. People only need a PC/laptop, a pair of headphones, and a small table to start their VR journey. However, the price of such technology is still a little bit high for us. For example, the price of a set of HTC Vive is over 600 dollars, which is high. Vive also requires an empty space of around 5 square meters to use, which is inconvenient for family-use. Well, we still have better choices like Google Cardboard. I believe that VR would be more and more common in the future.
