Final Project Post Matt Kaufax

Newhouse has a rich history of innovation, and we set out to capture the history of our college through the lens of innovators.  We weren’t exactly sure how to do this at the outset, but bringing Carla on to help us on the storytelling front was huge.  We gravitated towards singular events that could help to illuminate a particular aspect of Newhouse’s past; for instance, LBJ’s Gulf of Tonkin Speech as an introduction of sorts for Newhouse I.

Aside from ironing out our storytelling problems, we faced technical difficulties as well.  We learned that trying to blend and cross-stitch from certain distance didn’t work, and we had to reshoot at least one scene.  Being prepared and planning ahead are two very underrated things, and our spontaneous nature got us into trouble a few times.  Not having charged batteries for the taskcam during our opening shoot of the courtyard joining all three buildings was rough.

Luckily our super director, the legend himself, Mr. Kyle Ott saved the day.

We wanted t create a gaze-based viewing experience, but unfortunately that would’ve taken too much time, not just to do, but to learn.  It’s tricky stuff.  As such, the video is one story, divided into three parts.

This was truly a super group.  We all helped each other, volunteered to step up when our strengths left us suited to a particular task, and masked each others’ weaknesses in different areas very well.  I am so grateful to have been a part of such a selfless and benevolent unit.

Thank you to Professor Harper as well.  This semester started out with me thinking I was in way over my head, with little to no experience in this field.  I’m happy I stuck with it, and I really have been shown a whole new side to telling a story creatively.  I am fascinated by some of the technology that’s out there—and that we have access to so much of it.

Cheers to a great semester.
