Joel Sherman Final Project

I found this to be a very negative experience. My original plan was to create a character study of a supervillain. I would go from a normal-looking house to an evil lair accessed by the fireplace. I would do this by using Playmaker to teleport between each scene. Within each scene would be details and objects giving information on the character. I ran into a couple of problems. First, I realized that it would be too difficult to use objects to tell this person’s story; I would have to use...

Joel Sherman Independent Learning

For my independent learning requirement, I took the Unity3D Essential Training Course on Lynda.com. The course gives you the basics on using the Unity software. It also goes into greater depth on the fundamentals than what I initially learned in class. The course is largely a review of what I learned in class. However, there are a few tips that come in handy. First, it teaches you how to organize your assets. Before I took this course, when I uploaded assets to Unity, I would just stuff them into the...

Assignment 8 Joel Sherman

I found this project to be quit frustrating. The idea was to create a model of my shoe. In the end, most of the shoe didn't come through, and I ended up with what you see below. I think this technology has potential, but it isn't quite there yet. The software isn't easy to use, and the results were disappointing.

Joel Sherman Assignment 7

I have an interest in science-fiction and superhero films, and I want to be a screenwriter. This project is an opportunity to work in a genre I enjoy and explore an emerging medium. For my final project, I am planning on creating in Unity a tour of a supervillain’s evil lair. In the tour, the viewer will be on a track that runs through various rooms of the lair. The rooms will be designed so that objects are all on sides of the viewer. He/she will see the villain’s schemes,...

Assignment 6 Joel Sherman

I thought this scene went pretty well. The idea for this is that when the player entered a collider on a sphere in the ground, a zombie would zoom towards you. I did not have much difficulty in accomplishing this. The only issue I had with the Playmaker logic was that I used the wrong iTween action (“look towards”, not “move to”). Also, I downloaded the zombie off of Mixamo, so you had to apply the texture after you dropped it into the scene. This took a while to figure...

Joel Sherman Assignment 5

I had a lot of trouble with this scene. My original plan was to take my scene from Assignment 4 and make a couple of the objects interactive. This was incredibly difficult. Theoretically, when I entered the collider for a sphere in the ground, a robot was supposed to approach a soldier, causing the soldier to run away. The soldier’s action would be triggered by the robot entering its collider. When I exited the cube collider, the robot would return to its original position. In practice, when the robot entered...

Assignment 4: Joel Sherman

I thought, overall, that creating the Unity scene went well. The scene ended up having the rough shape of what I was envisioning. One problem I had was that I was unable to get the castle walls flush with each other. There were gaps between some of the sections. Also, the hill that the tower is on is too steep. However, I am happy that I was able to have the sound from the spaceship overhead be visible on the ground. There are a few things that I still need...

Assignment 3: Joel Sherman

Our group went through two different ideas before we settled on filming the swimming practice. The first idea we had was to film the Chinese New Year celebrations in New York City. Ariel was planning to go down there, so our plan was to have her take a 360 camera and film what she sees. She would then upload her footage onto Google Drive, and Yeagee and I would edit it. Ariel couldn’t rent a camera for the duration of the trip, so the plan fell through. Plan B was...

Joel Sherman Assignment 1

On Wednesday, I tried the Oculus Rift VR headset. I thought it was amazing. I’m not used to virtual reality, so I was dumbstruck by it. The film I saw was “Invasion.” “Invasion” is a short animated VR film where you are one of a pair of bunnies have to prevent an alien invasion. As an animated comedy, the film works. It’s funny, and is able to hold your attention. The film also works as a virtual reality experience. What I liked the most about “Invasion” was how immersive it...
