Graduate Student Assignment – Federico Ghelli

Here in the United States many news companies started to invest in virtual reality and specifically in 360 video production. New York Times VR, Discovery VR, and the recent acquisition of Ryot by the Huffington Post showed an increasing in interest in this new technology. In my home country, Italy, virtual reality has yet to become a prevalent medium. However, one company called Finegil (controlled by Gruppo L'Espresso) produced one of the first 360 videos for a national publication. Andrea Iannuzzi, director of Gruppo L'Espresso, collaborated in the realization of...

Assignment 7 – Federico Ghelli

For this assignment I tried to add a parasite character to my underwater fortress. As you can see from the video, the effects on the car and the robot soldier work fine, but the effect connected to the Mixamo character freezes for unknown reasons. I followed all the steps from a tutorial on the Mixamo website but it still doesn't want to work. I guess that the parasite doesn't like to dance the YMCA. What a fool! https://youtu.be/WP-42LBd2_c

360° Marshall St.

Every day, Syracuse University's students and staff populate Marshall Street for many different reasons: some go there for their lunch break, others want to enjoy a cold beer with friend, and some just like to hang out in one of the most famous street in Syracuse. Because of the importance of Marshall Street, for my project I realized a 360 degree video of some of the businesses that made the history of this street. To realize this project I relied on the loved/hated GoPro 360 kit, a Tascam digital recorder,...

360 Nadir Patch One thing that I want to take credit during this course is that I was the first to discover how to add nadir patches to 360 videos. The process of doing it is was easier than I thought and didn't require any advanced skill with Autopano. The first step is to create a circular logo. If you know how to do so in Photoshop than you'll be able to create an awesome logo that will fit the story you're trying to tell. Otherwise, on there are plenty...

Final Project Pitch – Federico Ghelli

Innocorp sells alcohol impairment  simulator kits ranging from $1,060 to $6,250. These goggles aim to show people the effects of alcohol by blurring eyesight and peripheral vision. My idea is to create a virtual reality experience that will reproduce the effects of alcohol and drugs, offering a more powerful and visual experience than the simple goggles. A virtual reality drug and alcohol simulator would be also cheaper ($20 for Google Cardboard vs. $1,060 for the cheapest goggle kit), and it would offer a wider variety of effects (not just alcohol). My...

Assignment 6 – Federico Ghelli

I decided to play with my original Underwater Fortress world and enhance it with a couple of assets I found on the Asset Store. For this assignment  I followed a tutorial on how to create triggers to start an action with PlayMaker. Here's the link.  After I learned how to use it, I put a German-speaking cyber soldier in my world. When you enter the trigger area you can hear say something, which translated in English is "Stop! Stay where you are." Once you leave the trigger area he'll shout...

Assignment 5 – Federico Ghelli

That was an adventure! creating my world in Unity with little knowledge of the software was a learning and humbling experience. I tried to stick to the basics and create something that would look appropriate for a video game. My concept is an underwater fort in a desert-like environment. I added a few buildings from a desert fortress pack and a tank to make the whole thing more war-like. The idea is to have a scenario were the protagonist is a soldier who lives in an underwater fort and needs...
