Assignment 5: 3D Models and Scanning

Assignment 5: 3D Models and Scanning

By: Kristen Powers

With this assignment I discovered that I am really good at scanning people with the iPad. During Wednesday's class I scanned Eric and I was really impressed with how it turned out so I decided to incorporate him into my scene.

I did not have too much trouble bringing him into my scene, but I did find that the texture was not as solid as it appeared when on the scanner. I could not figure out how to make it so that he was completely solid. I tried making sure everything was selected in the mesh and to add the skin to every part of him, but it never worked out perfectly. However, he is in there and you can tell it is him.

Part of this assignment was to create a scene of where I was this summer. I was actually in Bolivia for a couple weeks this summer with my church, so my scene resembles that....only with the addition of Eric. He was there over the summer in spirit?

I built a scene around one of the villages we visited there. There are some very affluent parts of Bolivia, but we spent most of our time in the villages-- playing and teaching kids, etc. This incorporated sand, mud, some beaten grass, and some rundown houses, cats running around. Many of the Bolivians I met always loved to sing or play music, so I added some music that you may hear in Bolivia.

I added the scan I did on the iPad, but I do want to also mention my experience with 123D catch. I tried it on a few items and I still can not get it perfect. I found that no matter how many pictures I took it never looked complete, and like the full object I was capturing. I'll keep playing with the app because it does seem neat.

I was able to export this project for a mac so I was pretty happy about that. I have been having a lot of exporting issues, so I got lucky this time!

For the last part of the assignment-- I also uploaded my web version of the scene to the FTP using Cyberduck. For Assignment 5 it looked like it was from another semester, but I added mine in there anyways.
