Thomas Viola – Unity assignment

A former VR Storytelling student told me the biggest piece of advice for using Unity is to never give up. I promptly went and blew that advice. The video you see here is incredibly basic, because this was my second attempt at finishing this project. The first attempt was going well until I broke something in Unity, tried to go back to a point I knew was safe, only to find out that for some reason it was still broken. At that point I did probably the worst thing possible. I dove into the console code and tried to fix it. This was an absolute disaster. Like pouring jet fuel on an open fire, or building a theme park with dinosaurs in it. Or financing a Michael Bay movie. Everything blew up in my face. So I scrapped the project and started again.

Originally I had an area with a crater and a rocket crashed in it. I also had a second rocket crash near the opening spawn point I had set, and I had tried, and failed, to add both a flyable rocket and a lake in part of the crater. These things would be cool to add in a future attempt when I knew more of what I was doing though.

With our basic knowledge of Unity, I think you could definitely make some incredibly immersive "walking simulator" games, where a player moves through a world, interacting with pieces that are in place there, but not doing much to affect the world as a whole. It would be about discovery rather than action, which allows for a simpler design with few moving parts. Games such as Gone Home and Firewatch are good examples of the space already being used in that way.

The focus would be on getting lost in the world, and discovering hidden items and areas to take in, rather than completing a direct objective, or interacting with NPC characters, which require more effort to place in. As the user moves through the scene, they learn more about the story of the world around them. The VR space would be perfect for this due to it's high level of immersion with a limited level of interaction with the world.
