Week 2 – 1/25 Lecture Notes

Week 2 – 1/25 Lecture Notes

5:15-5:30: Housekeeping

  • Remember: take survey AND do assignment 1 as blog post. Last time you can be late and get credit ...
  • Quick check on enrollment. Please humor me as I take new photos of you ...
  • Our #VRStorytelling hashtag has been hijacked. New suggestions? (Maybe #VRNewhouse).
  • VR Experience research presentations. Review VR Experience Research page and sign up for a slot. First presentation next week!
  • I'm at Sundance Friday-Sunday. Text me if there's something you hear about that I should check out.
  • Check out Dear Angelica on the Oculus + Touch in the Innovation Lab.
  • Wasim and Aubrey's 360 of Seneca Falls women's march.
  • NYTimes Daily 360: https://www.nytimes.com/video/the-daily-360

5:30 -5:45: Discussion about experiences from week 1 (your posts).

5:45-6: Shooting in 360. Things to consider:

  • Tripod height: where's my head?
  • How tall do you expect to be?
  • Where do I face first? Put that in the middle. (You can change later in Premiere).
  • Don't move much, or too fast. If you do, no faster than a walking pace. No jitters!
  • Sorry, but your awesome 360 skydiving or race-car drive is a vomit comet.
  • Don't make people read too much if at all. Never more than a tweet at a time.
  • See more first-time tips here.

6-6:10: Shooting with stitchless 360 cameras work.

  • Samsung Gear360, stitchless, requires Samsung Action Director (PC only) to stitch two images. (We will do this in the lab together later today).
  • Nikon KeyMission, stitchless, take straight off the card.

6:10-6:30: Post-production in Adobe Premiere Pro with Nikon KeyMission footage.

  • Copy files.
  • Open in Premiere Pro.
  • New to Premiere? Follow the steps in the tip sheet at NHMediahelp.syr.edu. Some key things to keep in mind:
    • ALWAYS work off your hard drive! You must set up folders and point to them from Premiere for each project.
    • Turn on the 360 VR tools (details here.)
    • Export with the correct settings (details here).

6:30-6:40: Post-production of Samsung Gear360 files.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro steps are the same, but before you can use Premiere you must stitch.
  • Let's go to the Innovation Lab to learn how to do that. (Walk walk walk ...)

6:40-6:50: Assignment 2

  • Assignment 2 is to write a 360 video script. DUE NEXT WEDNESDAY MORNING.
  • Your mission: come up with an idea so awesome that a team votes to shoot with you.
  • An incentive: All of the first videos will be on the Interactive Media Wall.

6:50-7:30: Now, team up with a video team and go forth and shoot!

  • Inside, outside, differnet lighting conditions.
  • Bring footage back to innovation lab.

7:30-8: Watch the footage in VR.

  • We will load it on the PCs and watch in Oculus.

I'm the lead professor for the VR Storytelling class and the Chair of Journalism Innovation at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
