Assignment 4: Final Team Video

Flying Wild Goose Dance

Bingzhu Luo (Sarah) & Trang Tran

THE MAIN CONCEPT

The main idea of this VR video is to introduce one of the most famous sleeve dances in China: Flying Wild Goose. Compared with our first rough cut, we added more story background and basic introduction to this sleeve dance, such as the historical background, a related Chinese TV drama, and the meaning of this classical dance. My role is this section includes writing the dance introduction, doing the video cutting for the historical background from a famous Chinese TV drama, writing and recording a concise dance introduction, and making our group logo. My partner Trang did a great job in the final video editing!

THE SCENE

1)     In the first part of the video comes from the original trailer of a famous Chinese TV drama, Empresses in the Palace. It is this TV drama that brought this classical dance, Flying Wild Goose, to a huge number of audience and made it become crazily popular in China. We used some scenes from the trailer to introduce the historical background of the dance.

2)     After the trailer, the video moves to the main story. Two Chinese dancers are dancing the sleeve dance in  a large hallway with great lightings and reshowing the beauty of classical dance originated from more than 1,000 years ago.

It is the great time for audience to take a closer look to the dancer. The camera will capture both the overall dancing movements and details of the costume and dancer.

3) We made our own logo and put it in the bottom of the video to show our title and credits. (Also hide the tripod and some black holes)

AUDIO

The first part of the audio comes from the original TV drama trailer. After the trailer introduction ends, the music changes back into the dancing music of Flying Wild Goose.

STORY DISCOVERY

We changed a lot in what we want to bring to viewers. In our first rough cut, we are trying to describe two Chinese dancers and their psychological activities. However, for people who have even never seen this kind of Chinese dance before, that's too hard and unwise. Thus, in our final video, we are guiding experiencers to go through the history and the love meaning of this DANCE, instead of dancers. Exploring the mysterious and touching historical meaning of this dance.

In order to help audience better understand this classical Chinese dance, we also recorded a one-min dance introduction and put it into the video.

"Sleeve dance, also called water sleeve dance helps dancers to perform various movements and exaggerate their feelings with silk-like long sleeves attached to the costume. Flying Wild Goose is one of the most famous Chinese sleeve dances originated from Tang Dynasty 1,000 years ago. It describes the behaviors and beautiful flying movements of wild gooses, representing their ever-lasting love.
In a recent Chinese TV drama, Empresses in the Palace, a young beauty Zhen Huan gave a performance of this dance, Flying Wild Goose, and showed her sincere love to the King. Eventually, she won the heart of the King by her amazing dance, and this dance also became a legend of this Palace."
