Assignment 4: Freestyle Squad Dance Rehearsal 360 Video

Initially, our topic was 360 thriller vdo. We filmed it along the apartment corridor and a dark apartment room where we had a fake ghost jumping out at the end. However, during post-production, we realized that the program could not identify different shots and the stitch came out not well. Therefore, we decided to reshoot with a whole new topic during daytime and with lots of lights.

We decided to do a 360 video of the dance rehearsal that SU Freestyle Squad prepared for Chinese Spring Festival Gala. The dance combined western street dance with Chinese Tai Chi and zen concept. We thought it would be a cool experience for the viewers to see from a different perspective being among the dancers. The camera was put in the middle of the dance crew which will give you the feeling of being surrounded by the dancers, and their dance moves were effective for the 360 video because at one point they had a sequence where they danced one by one which reflected how their energy transferred around the circle.

During post-production, we faced with stitching problems; some frames were not stitched smoothly. There were a lot of movements in the vdo, and at one point one of the dancers came too close to the camera which made it hard for the stitching. We used Autopano giga to edit the control points, blend, layers, vertical lines tool, after the position of different frame shots. In addition, when we try to fix one point of the image, another point in the image changes, so we prioritize the main points instead, such as fixing the human's head before the lines on the wall.

At the end, we learned so much about creating 360 video, from pre-production to post-production; how there will always be technical problems, how long it takes to render, and that it's better to use stitchless camera to avoid with all the stitching problems which can take a very long time.
