Assignment 2: VR story pitch

Assignment 2: VR story pitch

General Idea

The Speach Candy shop is one of the longest family business in Syracuse and they just celebrated the 95 year anniversary last year. The general idea is showing how the candy shop works.

THE SCENE

The video wants to give the audiences a tour in the candy shop, so at the beginning, the audiences should be outside the shop. The scene will be in the large, open space. The shop located in a quiet neighborhood so there won’t be too much movement. The camera will be at an average human height of between 5'4 and 5'10 to show the audiences how the candy shop really looks like from the outside.

LIGHTING

Except the opening scene will be the daylight & outside, the rest of the video will be shot under the indoor lighting. The light in the candy shop is bright except some corners, as long as we avoid them, the light should be OK.

EXPERIENCE

After the opening scene, the video will be shot in two different rooms. The shop and the candy making room. Everyone had the experience shopping in the candy shop, but have they ever paid attention to every kind of candy in the shop? Speach Candy Shop has many unique kinds of candy including the old-fashioned candy sticks and family- recipe chocolate. The video will allow the audiences to pay close attention to the sweet candies. Besides, looking at the colorful candies is compelling enough.

In the candy making room, the audiences will be able to observe how hand-made candies produced, how the makers stir the chocolate liquor and how they pour it into the model. This experience will be very sweet for most people, except those who are allergic to candies.

STORY DISCOVERY

The main character of the story will be the owner of the candy shop, Michael Speach. He is the fifth generation in the family and took over the shop from his father several years ago. He made many changes to the shop, including inventing the new recipes and holding some events. There will be no particular story in the video, but Michael’s daily routine in the shop can move the video forward. He arrives at the shop pretty early everyday and deals with the orders, makes candies by himself, receives the customers.

The problem Michael faces everyday is how to attract more customers. The hand-made candy is much more expensive. Except during the holiday season, not many customers will choose hand-made when they have cheaper choice.

For the audio part, Michael will be the anchor of the story and tells his own story. How he took over the shop, what he did to attract more customers, the procedures of candy making, ect. The audio should match the video so the audiences can understand the background of the story.

WHERE IS MY HEAD?

The video will be shot in three different spaces: outside the shop, inside the shop and inside the candy making room. The rig will be placed on the ground and at the center of the room, to observe every part of the shop. The height of the rig will be the height of a normal person, between 5'4 and 5'10. The audience will have the experience observing the shop from their normal standing viewing angle.

SAFETY

When we shot outside the shop, we can hide in the car after the shooting begins and make sure no one steals the equipment from the car. There are some cars parking next to the shop under most circumstances.

When we shot inside the shop, we can go outside after we set up the rig. The main character, Michael will act normal as there is no camera and I think the rig is pretty safe with him.

Biggest concern

The permission. The candy shop is family biz and some recipes are secrets. It's maybe difficult to get the permission to shoot the candy making process.
