Assignment 2 – Caitlin Gillman


Assignment 2 was a lot of fun, but also caused me some headache.

Originally, I wanted to do an intricate battle scene between futuristic looking characters on the surface of the moon. However, those dreams were quickly squashed when the futuristic characters I found in the asset store and online failed to work when I uploaded them into Unity. So I decided to change the focus of my project to just a moon landing with some astronauts, space ships, and other space-related objects.

I took to a program called "World Machine" to generate a badass terrain that I could put into my Unity scene. World Machine only works with Windows, so I switched over to the Windows side of my harddrive to work on it. After spending some time making a cool terrain that resembled the surface of the moon, I tried importing the terrain into Unity. When I brought in the terrain from World Machine, it was HUGE and incredibly stretched out. For some reason, Unity would not let me edit it at all, so I unfortunately had to scrap it (and my idea) entirely.

I changed my idea once again and decided to put space explorers on the surface of Mars. I couldn't find a decent Mars texture from the free online textures, so I just made the terrain a reddish orange color. I then placed a bunch of assets that I found on the asset store and online, as well as a space-themed skybox, in my scene. I also found a super cool animated alien that I wanted to use in my scene, but it caused a lot of coding problems so I had to take it out, unfortunately.

The biggest problem I faced was when I tried building my scene and uploading it to the server. For some reason, my scene refused to build and would quit halfway through. After getting frustrated and taking an absurd amount of time to figure out the problem, I realized that nothing was getting solved and just uploaded my entire project file onto the server. I still don't know what went wrong with my scene and hopefully I can figure it out before I have the issue again.

Although I had a lot of technical difficulties with this project, I did enjoy it. I've never really used Unity all that much, so it was nice for me to get familiar with the program. It's a lot like the other 3D programs I know how to use, especially Unreal, so it was pretty easy for me to get comfortable with it. I'm looking forward to working with the program more and making more cool 3D environments to explore!
