Assignment 1-Dingyue Zhang

Last Wednesday night, I tried 3D scan, Samsung Gear, Oculus and Google Cardboard on Virtual Reality class. It was really fun to experience something new and I can’t wait to learn more this semester.

The device that worked best is Oculus. I picked an air crash scene and what really helped is the sound. The roar of the plane and the people’s screaming were so real that made you feel like being in the scene. Another great part is that you can control the direction of yourself with the keyboard; you can move forward or turn around, which is so fun. I saw another classmate picked the scene of north pole and she can keep moving and it felt like she is going to touch the aurora. Oculus reminds me of my experience at Universal Studio. Although I’m not sure if it’s the same kind of technology, they do have many similarities. If the price for Oculus can go down after the tech becomes more mature, it will save people much time of waiting in the line at the amusement park.

Samsung Gear is another thing that amazed me. It was my second time to try it but I felt something different. Last semester, I experienced the Avengers scene and saw Jarvis. It was fun, but I knew it want’s real because Jarvis isn’t exist in the real world. This time I saw the prairie of Mongolia and I could even see the move of grass. With the traditional Mongolia music, it felt like a flock will appear next second. No wonder someone was hired by Discovery channel. The gear is perfect for showing the beauty of nature.

As for Google cardboard, it’s a great gear for VR starters. It’s affordable, it’s easy to use and the Apps have some great resources. However, compared to the more professional ones, it’s not that good. The screen resolution of the phone is not that high and you have to hold the cardboard all the time. I think the sound will become more clear and solid when I use the better headphone.

One thing I find pretty annoying about all the gears is that they are not glass friendly. It’s hard to use the gears when I wear my glasses and when I take off my glasses, although Samsung Gear can adjust the clarity, it’s still a little blurring.

Anyway, the experience was great and looking forward to try more!
