360 Video Pitch – Go-karting in 360 (EDIT: NOW WITH VIDEO)

Ever been on a go-kart? Even if you have a license and can drive the real thing (a car) a go-kart is wicked fun. The GoPro enabled a great way to get a driver's view of the action, and for this video pitch I'm aiming to take it a step further and shoot 360 video. Think of this as a sort of "sights and sounds" piece you've seen in a local newspaper (or in this example from a former Newhouse student, Amanda Marzullo). No interviews, really, mostly visuals and audio that really put you there.

I'd aim for at least two different shots to cut this piece together - a shot of the camera placed somewhere in the middle of the track so that you can look around as the karts race around you, and a shot from inside the cart itself (I'm thinking we'd have to suction or tape down a camera onto a helmet or something).

There's an indoor go-karting place in the Destiny USA Mall (Pole Position) and so if given the approval I'd have to make the approach pretty quick to see if they'd be on board to do this. I've sweet talked my way into crazier things in journalism, but if that doesn't work, there are a few (though not as many as there used to be) others in the area to try.

(UPDATE 5 p.m. Feb. 1 - Talked to Pole Position here and their corporate office - they have given us the green light to do this! So we won't have any trouble there).

This wouldn't be the first 360 degree video with go-karts out there, but I'm hoping to get better audio and cut together more scenes to produce something a little more compelling than just a camera on a kart, as most of the videos are.

EDIT 2/14/17 - Here's a first version of the video below!

EDIT 3/5/17 - Wow, that first edit was pretty dizzying. Here's one that won't hurt your head as much, after we went for a third visit to Pole Position.
