Knickerbocker Independent Learning

For my independent learning project I chose to seek out some further guides on using Playmaker for Unity. Initially I tried to watch some of the lynda.com videos on blackboard, but found that most didn't touch on playmaker. After searching through lynda.com and not having much luck, I went to youtube and found a great series of tutorials on playmaker. Although the guy creating the videos has quite the accent, I found his videos gave some really useful tips to make animating easier. My favorite tip was renaming objects for...

Knickerbocker Assignment 6

This assignment tasked us to add sound to a scene in Unity. Originally I thought that the class exercise of being in the sound lab would be my project, since the sound tracks would be up and I could try to recreate it, but when I didn't see the tracks I went to Plan B. My next idea was to add to my increasingly absurd scene something from my summer, my first trip on an airplane. I found airplane and jet assets from the asset store and then picked from...

Knickerbocker Assignment 5

Utilizing 3D scans for this project was great in theory. It truly brings reality to VR, and seems like a stepping stone to the future of VR in journalism. However, in practice utilizing 3D scans can be a frustrating process. First using the scanner to obtain a 3D scan can be tricky to grasp. You must have the red thermo field over your target to even begin the scan. I found this tricky for both humans and objects, but especially tricky for objects. Then at all times you must stay...

Assignment 4- Knickerbocker

This assignment was the first that didn't seem to be 8,000 problems for me. I like the way that Mixamo is very user friendly, and that you can take a prefab character and animate it and have it functioning in your scene in just a few simple steps. For my project I just chose a random character, Andromeda, who I thought looked strange enough to be doing the strange animation I added to her for my scene- spinning on her head. I added one Andromeda head spinning and another Andromeda...

Assignment 2- Knickerbocker

For this assignment I focused on trying to learn basic aspects of unity to create what could be an establishing scene to a story. I experimented with different textures to add shading to the mountains and create a lake and stone path. I added assets like a medieval house, wooden bridge, and cart to add to this theme that my scene was taking place a long time ago. I liked that the scene left you wondering whether to head to the lake, the house, or the mountains because it would...

Observations by a First Time VR User

Virtual Reality. Two words I had scarcely heard and probably even more scarcely thought about before taking this course. So naturally, on Wednesday while trying out the Samsung Gear for the first time I had no idea what to expect. I'm supposed to move my head left to right, up and down. Okay. It's going to look like I was there in person, ideally. Okay. Eventually devices like this will allow us first row seats to basketball games and simulate an around the world adventure, for potentially a much cheaper...
