Independent Study Carla Sertin

I read "Slay the Dragon" as a part of this class and I'm trying to apply some of its principles to my current Unity project (on post-war life). I'll be honest, a good amount of the book was not relevant to what I'm trying to do with my project, but it's good knowledge to have for future VR storytelling adventures. I know how to write a story and I can even film a not-so-bad short. But throw a character who can interact with things within the story and I get...

Graduate Student Requirement Carla Sertin

In the past few months I've become completely immersed in virtual reality and its seemingly infinite possibilities. Because it's still a growing field, I've been able to engage with others who have thrown themselves into the adventurous (and often glitchy) field of virtual reality. Gaming in VR Most people associate VR with video games. While the gaming world is not even close to the only field in which VR will have an immense impact, the link seems natural. One of the main trends I've noticed is a tendency to stick to comfortable...

Carla Sertin Final Project Post

We wanted to create a tour that would give viewers an understanding of Newhouse through the lens of innovation. From Newhouse 1 to the Innovation Lab, our school has a history of media innovation. Through the process of filming and editing the project I learned the importance of planning ahead. We tried some things that we didn't think would cause issues in post-production, like crossing the stitch line at about 7ft distance from the camera. They caused issues in post-production and we had to reshoot a scene, which ended up being for...

Dreams of Dali Presentation

Dreams of Dali is a VR experience created by Goodby Silverstein & Partners, a digital media ad agency. It's their first foray into the VR world, and it's a pretty great starting point. The VR environment is based on Dali's "Archaeological Reminiscence of Milet's 'Angelus'," and is designed to feel like the audience is walking around Dali's mind, using the painting as a jumping off point. You can take a look at the trailer for Dreams of Dali here, or see the full 360 video here. I also referenced The...

Carla Sertin – Final Pitch

Newhouse Innovation and Invention Group Project Our project seeks to frame the world of Newhouse through the lens of innovation. Over the years the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications has been an important part in driving the growth of the media. Lyndon B. Johnson gave his Gulf of Tonkin speech at the commemoration of Newhouse 1. Great newscasters and entertainers like Regis Philbin graduated from the school and went on to change the media as we know it.Our final project seeks to pull back the curtain on our school....

Assignment 7 Carla Sertin: Never trust creepy kids who tell you to follow them

Have you ever been the life of the party? Had everyone groan when you said you had to leave? I imagine it's something like the crux of this Unity game. I added Mixamo characters to my original creepy city scene. I had some trouble with making the young girl walk on the terrain instead of under it... It's still not where I want it to be, but much better than before. The triggers are five spheres and a cube. I attached animation and audio to the player entering and exiting the trigger area to...

Assignment 6: Carla Sertin finds treasure

Simple Playmaker test: Finding treasure! As the magic floating disco ball moves over a long distance, I used two trigger zones. They're rigged so that the ball moves when the player enters the zone, and again when they exit it. I attempted a more complicated animation but couldn't get it to work -- I was using a Mixamo character and think I may have imported it wrong/done something to the settings that they cannot forgive. I tried to make a character fade when the player entered a trigger zone using "Set Visibility"...

Carla Sertin Assignment 5: Creepy Cities and Moon Parties

Creepy City: Note: Please forgive the horrible audio -- music and footsteps sound very odd in the recording... I started working on this to get comfortable with Unity, so I tried to do some things that I wasn't really prepared for. I tried setting 'trigger zones' where music would transition to a 'suspense' audio clip (like when you enter a boss fight in a video game and the music suddenly shifts to action mode). I found a tutorial on the Unity website, followed it, and failed. I didn't look for...

Carla Sertin – Stitching very similar videos in Auto Pano

My group filmed three dancers doing a routine to Beyonce's "Formation". Because we filmed in Studio D, which has a wraparound black curtain, the backgrounds looked really similar and Autopano had a meltdown trying to figure out how to stitch the videos together -- to be brief, one of the dancers was working it on the ceiling... I googled the problem and found that you can use a template panorama to help Autopano figure out where each video should go. Basically, you take an existing 360 video project (the file from...

Assignment 2 – Syracuse’s international side

Syracuse's North Side is extremely diverse and houses refugees and immigrants from all over the world. Having reported on the issues they face, I've heard many of their stories and how they ended up in Syracuse. The concept is to share stories with the audience -- to have a panel of sorts, arranged around the camera in such a way that the viewer feels that they are part of the group. The idea is that hearing their backgrounds and their journey here will humanize refugees and immigrants, many of whom...
